In Cheshire a greedy eater was said to feed like a freeholder of Macclesfield, who has neither corn nor hay at Michaelmas. The joke was aimed at the town’s many poor button-makers, who had neither hay nor corn all the year round. Grose explained it as meaning to eat voraciously, like a half-starved workman.
