Michaelmas rent and the landlord’s credit

Michaelmas, 29 September, was the quarter day when rents fell due and the landlord came to collect. Poor Robin joked that tenants should not pay before they had the money, then advised them to pay on time so the landlord could keep his own credit and settle his bills.

For on the Nine and twentieth Day You must expect your Rent to pay; And tho' your Landlord come to crave it, Pray pay it not before you have it.
