The Welsh Michaelmas cake

At Michaelmas the Welsh housewife baked a very large loaf-cake of currant dough risen with barm, called the Michaelmas cake. For luck, pieces were given to every member of the family, to the servants and to any stranger who called at the house. Trevelyan wrote in 1909 that the Michaelmas goose and the Michaelmas cake still appeared in the houses of well-to-do Welsh people.

Pieces of this were distributed to every member of the family, the domestics, and any strangers who might call at the house. This is done for luck.
