Goose on Michaelmas Day

29 September

Lore and belief

Roast goose was the Michaelmas dinner, when stubble geese were at their best, and it was said that whoever ate goose that day would never want money all year. The custom seems to have come from tenants bringing a goose with the Michaelmas rent: in 1470 a Herefordshire tenant of the manor of Lastres owed one goose fit for his lord’s dinner every Michaelmas. A popular story said Queen Elizabeth was eating goose when she heard of the Armada’s defeat.

If you eat goose on Michaelmas-day you will never want money all the year round.
