Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael and all angels, was the usual time to elect the governors of towns and cities. Bourne said that whenever it came round it put people in mind of the old belief that every man has his own guardian angel, who attends him from birth to death and strives to bring him to heaven, and this was the talk of the country people at that season. He himself inclined to think a number of angels guarded us rather than a single one.
