Every man on Canna rode out at Michaelmas on an unsaddled horse with a girl or his neighbour’s wife behind him, and rode back and forth between the village and a cross. No one could tell Pennant why. Afterwards the women treated their partners at a public house, and at home the feast was a great oatcake called Struan-Micheil, St Michael’s cake, made of two pecks of meal, shaped like the quadrant of a circle and daubed with milk and eggs.
