No longer kept

In Yorkshire Michaelmas Day was called Hipping Day, after a confection made from hips, the red berries of the wild rose. On the Tweed side, Henderson added, the devil was believed to throw his club over the blackberries late in autumn and make them unwholesome.

In Yorkshire this festival is called " hipping day," from its connection with a confection of hips, the red berries of the wild rose.
