An old weather saying held that you could count the floods of the coming season from the moon on Michaelmas Day. However many days old the moon was that day, so many floods would follow. Hone found it in Stevenson’s Twelve Moneths of 1661.

They say, so many dayes old the moon is on Michaelmass-day, so many floods after.
