A Warwickshire correspondent remembered being taken as a child every Easter Monday to watch the charity-school children clip the churches of Birmingham. The children stood hand in hand with their backs to the church until the chain went right round it, amid crowds and cheering. When the last hand met the first they walked in procession to the town’s other church and did the same there. Church clipping is still done at a few churches elsewhere.
