The clerk’s ale at Easter

In the Easter holidays the parish clerk held his own church-ale, brewing for his private profit and for the pleasure of the neighbourhood. Aubrey, in notes of about 1678 quoted by Chambers, set it among the church-ales and doles that did the work of poor-rates before the Reformation.

In the Easter-holidays was the clerk's ""ale,"" for his private benefit and the solace of the neighbourhood.
