On Easter Monday several thousand working people of Belfast and the country round went out to the Cave Hill, about three miles from the town. They spent the day dancing, jumping, running races, climbing the rough rocks and drinking, and it often ended in brawls, black eyes and even broken bones. For many it was the greatest holiday of the year, and that evening the Belfast theatre usually put on a piece called The Humours of the Cave Hill.
