Chester’s proverb for locking up too late came from an Easter football game. While the mayor was busy with the men’s match on the Roodee, his daughter was playing football with other maidens in the Pepper-gate when her lover came through the gate and carried her off. The angry father had the gate closed for good, and the city was left with the saying.

The angry father, when he discovered the loss, ordered the Pepper-gate to be for ever closed
