The hare-pie scramble at Hallaton

On Easter Monday the rector of Hallaton provided pies, ale and penny loaves to be scrambled for, under a bequest of land once called Hare-crop Leys. By 1822 the pies were veal and bacon rather than hare, and the crowd carried them in a sack to Hare-pie Bank, where they were thrown into a hole and fought over along with two wooden bottles of ale. The correspondent noted that it had sometimes ended in a boxing match but had lately passed off in peace.
