In Durham on Easter Monday the men claimed the right to take off the women’s shoes, and on Easter Tuesday the women did the same to the men. Chambers places it beside the lifting of the western counties. He adds that clergy and lay people alike once played at ball in the churches at Easter for tansy cakes.
