A correspondent told Hone of a ball custom still kept every year at Bury St Edmunds. On Shrove Tuesday, Easter Monday and at Whitsuntide twelve old women divided into sides for a game of trap-and-ball, which they kept up with great spirit until sunset. One of them, a Mrs Gill of over sixty, had long been known as the mistress of the sport. Afterwards they went home and ended the day with music and merriment.
