Deering’s History of Nottingham records that by a custom beyond memory the mayor and aldermen of Nottingham and their wives walked out on Easter Monday, after morning prayers, to St Anne’s Well outside the town. The town waits played before them, and they were followed by the clothing, those who had been sheriffs and wore scarlet gowns ever after, with their wives, the town officers and many burgesses and gentlemen. Brand gives it among the customs of visiting wells at the great festivals of the year.
