At Ripon on the eve of All Saints the good wives made a cake for everyone in the family, so the evening was generally called Cake Night. Brand took the report from the Gentleman’s Magazine of 1790 and set it among other cakes baked for Hallowtide, such as the triangular cake of St Kilda and the soul cakes of the Midlands.

At Ripon, in Yorkshire, on the eve of All Saints, the good women make a cake for every one in the family: so this is generally called Cake Night.
