Lore and belief

Robert Heron, travelling through Scotland in the 1790s, found the fairies thought of as little beings, sometimes kind and sometimes spiteful. On Hallowe’en and some other nights they were abroad with the Gyar-Carlins, and would stop anyone who displeased them and cram them full of butter and barley awns. They were also blamed for carrying off children and for elf-shooting cattle.
