Lore and belief

Two men sat in the porch of Aberhafesp church on All Hallows’ Eve to learn whether anyone in the parish would die in the coming year, and at midnight one heard a voice inside call his sleeping companion’s name. Within weeks the sleeper carried the coffin of a fever victim across the Severn from Penstrowed and caught the fever himself, and he was the first to die in the parish that year. Owen had the story from Mr Breeze, late governor of the workhouse at Caersws. In Wales it was held that a spirit announced the year’s death roll at midnight on Nos Galan Gaeaf, and silence meant no death.

Mr. Breeze, late governor of the Union House at Caersws, told me that he had heard of a person going to Aberhafesp Church porch, on All-Hallows' Eve, to ascertain whether there would be a death in that parish in the coming year.
