The Angelystor of Llangernyw

31 October · Llangernyw, Denbighshire

Lore and belief

At Llangernyw it was said that on All Hallows’ Eve a spirit called the Angelystor announced from the altar the names of everyone who would die in the parish that year. Those anxious to know stood under the east window and listened. Owen tells of a tailor called Shon Robert who went at midnight to prove it a myth, heard his own name called, and cried that he was not quite ready; he died that year.

There was a tradition in this parish that on All-Hallows' Eve a Spirit announced from the altar the names of those who were doomed to die in the coming year. The Spirit was locally called Angelystor.
