To win three wechts of naething, a Scottish spell for Hallowe’en, the seeker went alone to the barn and opened both doors, taking them off their hinges if possible. There they went three times through the motions of winnowing corn against the wind with a wecht, the winnowing sieve, though there was no corn in it. On the third time an apparition passed through the barn, in at the windward door and out at the other, showing the figure and station in life of the future husband or wife.

You go to the barn and open both doors, taking them off the hinges, if possible: for there is danger that the being, about to appear, may shut the doors and do you some mischief.
