A Montgomeryshire servant girl walked seven times round the church on All Hallows’ Eve to raise the spirit of the man she would marry, and came home asking her mistress why the master had been sent out to frighten her. The master had never left the house; his wife, seeing it was his spirit, asked the girl to be kind to her children, and soon afterwards died, and the girl took her place. Owen had the tale from the son of the rector of Llanwyddelan, whose informant said it had happened to her, and noted that versions were told in many places in Wales.
