No longer kept

The minister of Logierait in Perthshire described the chief ceremony of Hallowe’en, kept there on 31 October by the old style calendar. Heath, broom and flax dressings were tied to a pole and set alight, and a man ran with the blazing faggot on his shoulders round the village, followed by a crowd. As each burned out another was tied on, and many were often carried about together, lighting up the dark night.

Heath, broom, and dressings of flax, are tied upon a pole. This faggot is then kindled. One takes it upon his shoulders; and, running, bears it round the village.
