No longer kept

On the eve of Samhain, according to General Vallancey, Irish country people went from house to house carrying sticks and clubs, collecting money, bread, butter, cheese and eggs for the feast and reciting verses. They made their demands in the name of St Columb Kill, asking householders to lay aside the fatted calf and bring out the black sheep. The women baked griddle cakes and made candles, which were sent round the neighbourhood and lit next day with prayers for the soul of the giver. Vallancey took it all for a survival of the Druids.
