Wheat sowing was to be over by Hallowmas Eve. October was the month for it, following the rye sown green in September, and Tusser’s advice, weather permitting, was to have it all in before All Saints. The end of wheat sowing was marked on the farm with the seed cake.

October for wheat sowing calleth as fast. / If weather will suffer, this counsell I giue, / Leaue sowing of wheat before Hallomas eue.
