The Eastwood woman rebuked for a Hallowe’en charm

A woman of Eastwood was brought before the kirk session for using charms at Hallowe’en. On the advice of an old woman from Ireland she had dipped her shirt in water from a well that brides and burials passed over and hung it before the fire, then either dreamed or saw something turn the chair it hung on. The minister of Eastwood quoted the confession from the session records, which ran back to 1689, and noted she was ordered to be rebuked before the congregation.
