No longer kept

One of the Hallowe’en spells Burns described among the country people of the west of Scotland had to be tried alone and in the dark. The girl went to the kiln, threw a ball of blue yarn into the kiln-pot and wound it off into a new ball, until near the end something held the thread. She then asked who held it, and a voice from the pot answered with the first name and surname of her future husband. In Ireland, according to Vallancey, girls threw a ball of yarn out of the window and wound it in, saying the Lord’s Prayer backwards, to see an apparition of the man.
