Lore and belief

At Whitbeck in Cumberland it was said that whichever way a bull faced as he lay on Hallowe’en, the wind would blow from that quarter for most of the winter. Henderson took the belief from Hutchinson’s History of Cumberland.

At Whitbeck, in Cumberland, it is said, that to whatever quarter a bull faces as he lies on All-Hallow Even, from thence the wind will blow during the greater part of the winter following.
