The Black Short-tailed Sow

31 October · North Wales

No longer kept

The autumn fire lit in North Wales on the eve of 1 November came with a round of ceremonies, according to an account Hone quoted from Owen. People ran through the fire and smoke and each threw a stone into it, and at the end everyone ran off to escape the black short-tailed sow. Then came a supper of parsnips, nuts and apples, catching with the mouth at apples hung on a string or floating in a tub, and throwing nuts in the fire: a nut that burned bright meant a good year, one that burned black and crackled meant bad luck.
