In North Wales the fairies were thought to be busiest at stealing babies and leaving their own in the cradle on Nos Wyl Ifan, St John’s Eve. A mother kept her child safe by staying near it, by laying the tongs crosswise on the cradle, and by having it baptised early. Owen heard such tales from an old man of the Penrhyn quarry district, who hinted that fairies had changed children even in prosperous families.
