The Chester Midsummer show

23 June · Chester, Cheshire

Still kept

Chester set its watch on St John’s Eve with a great pageant. An ordinance of 1564 called for four giants, a unicorn, a dromedary, a camel, a luce, a dragon and six hobby-horses, according to ancient custom. A mayor had the giants broken in 1599, but the next mayor but one brought them back; they were destroyed under the Commonwealth and made new at the Restoration, with arsenic in the paste to stop the rats eating them. The accounts also paid for a dragon with six naked boys to beat at it, an elephant and castle, a ship that turned round, and six morris dancers with pipe and tabor. A Midsummer Watch parade with giants is again held in Chester.
