Grass rent to Mannan on Barrule

On Midsummer Eve the Manx carried green meadow grass to the top of Barrule as rent to Mannan-beg-mac-y-heir. They also lit fires to windward of every field so the smoke drifted over the corn, carried burning gorse round their cattle, and gathered mugwort against witchcraft. Dyer took this from Train’s History of the Isle of Man.

it was on this occasion they bore green meadow grass up to the top of Barule in payment of rent to Mannan-beg-mac-y-heir.
