At Port Eynon in Gower the villagers gathered culm, the small coal of the district, and kept it hidden for a fire on 23 June, Midsummer Eve. A correspondent signing H. saw it done in 1819 and was told the custom had been kept time out of mind. At neighbouring Llangennith, whose patron saint’s feast fell on the 24th, the garlands, pole, dances and bonfire were still kept up.

At Port-Einon, a small village in that insulated part of Glamorganshire, called Gower, culm is collected and hid against a fire on the 23d of June
