Pennant’s manuscript notes that in Wales people had the custom of sticking St John’s wort over their doors on the eve of St John the Baptist. The plant, which flowers at midsummer and takes its name from the saint, was one of the herbs hung up that night across Britain. In London Stow saw it with birch, fennel, orpine and white lilies over the doors.
