Donald McQueen of Skye told of seeing the Irish St John’s Eve fires in 1782. At exactly midnight fires broke out on every hill within thirty miles, and the people danced round them, went through them and passed their children and cattle through the flames. Chambers also notes that leaping through the Midsummer fire lasted longest in Ireland. Bonfires are still lit on St John’s Eve in many parts of Ireland.
