The Cooks’ bonfires on the Sandhill

23 June · Sandhill, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland

No longer kept

The ordinary of the Company of Cooks at Newcastle, drawn up in 1575, bound the fellowship to keep up at its own cost the town’s two bonfires on the Sandhill, as the ancient custom was. One was lit on Midsummer Eve, the eve of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, and the other on the eve of St Peter’s Day, whenever the mayor and aldermen wished to have them. Brand found this among the records of his own town.

one bone-fire on the Even of the Feast of the Nativitie of St. John Baptist, commonly called Midsomer Even
