No longer kept

On Midsummer Eve people in Herefordshire and Somerset lit fires in the fields and along the lanes to bless the apples. Aubrey saw it done in Somerset in 1685, though he said it was kept there only for custom’s sake. He guessed it came down from Ceres searching for Proserpina by torchlight.

Mdm in Herefordshire, and also in Somersetshire, on Midsommer-eve, they make fires in the fields in the waies: sc. to Blesse the Apples.
