At Stoole, as Hone calls Struell, near Downpatrick, crowds gathered from midnight on Midsummer Eve at a mount sacred to St Patrick with three holy wells. Pilgrims ran seven times round heaps of stones, climbed the steep hill on bare knees, some carrying stones on their heads, and at St Patrick’s Chair an old man turned each of them round three times for a fee. The sick and lame crowded to bathe in the wells, and the gathering of 1825 was said to be the largest ever.
