Hutchinson’s History of Cumberland says that the parish of Cumwhitton held its wake on the eve of St John, with the lighting of fires and dancing. Hutchinson called it the old Bel-teing, linking it with the Beltane fires of Scotland. Brand notes it among the Midsummer fires that were still lit in the north of England.
