Lore and belief

In England it was believed that anyone who sat up fasting all night in the church porch on St John’s Eve would see the spirits of those who were to die in the parish in the coming year. They came in turn and knocked at the church door in the order in which they would die. Grose tells of one watcher who fell so fast asleep he could not be woken, while his companions saw his own spirit go and knock.
