Brand recorded that a Midsummer bonfire was once made on Whiteborough, a burial mound on St Stephen’s Down near Launceston. A tall summer pole with a bush on top stood in the middle with the fuel heaped round it, and wrestlers competed for small prizes about it. A countryman told Brand that at one of these gatherings an evil spirit appeared in the shape of a black dog, and after that nobody could wrestle there even in fun without being hurt, so the wrestling was given up. The country people also believed giants were buried in such mounds and would not disturb them.
