Shoes in the form of a T

Lore and belief

A Dorset man writing for the Year Book said Midsummer Eve was the great night for girls to find out whom they would marry. A girl would walk through the garden with a rake on her left shoulder, throwing hemp seed over her right, so that her husband would appear behind her with a scythe. Or at bedtime she set her shoes at right angles in the shape of a T, saying a rhyme, and would see him in a dream or at her bedside. Another way was to float the letters of the alphabet face down in a basin of water overnight, and the first letter of his name would be turned up by morning.

Hoping this night my true love to see, I place my shoes in the form of a T.
