No longer kept

At Callander a bonfire was lit in every village on All Saints’ Eve. When it had burned out the ashes were raked into a circle, and a stone was set near the edge for each member of the families who shared the fire. Anyone whose stone was found moved or damaged next morning was held to be fey and not expected to live another twelve months. The neighbouring Highland parishes, Kirkmichael among them, still lit bonfires on the first night of winter.

When the bonfire is consumed, the ashes are carefully collected into the form of a circle. There is a stone put in, near the circumference, for every person of the several families interested in the bonfire
