Plot’s History of Oxfordshire records that the people of Burford, within living memory in 1677, made a dragon every year and carried it up and down the town with great jollity on Midsummer Eve, adding a giant as well for no reason anyone knew. Plot thought the custom began with a battle fought near Burford about the year 750, when Cuthred of the West Saxons defeated Ethelbald of Mercia and took his banner bearing a golden dragon. Brand doubted this, pointing out that dragons were carried at Midsummer in Germany and elsewhere too.
