Three nails for the falling sickness

23 June

Lore and belief

Lupton’s Book of Notable Things gives a cure for epilepsy tied to Midsummer Eve. Three nails were to be made on the vigil of the Nativity of St John the Baptist and driven into the ground where the sufferer had fallen, so deep that they could not be seen. The patient’s name was spoken while they were driven in, and the disease was then supposed to be driven away for good.
