A cheese through the Midsummer fire at Newton

23 June · Newton, Glamorgan

No longer kept

Old people at Newton in Glamorgan remembered meeting at a small stone enclosure near the village well on Midsummer Eve and throwing a small cheese across through the flames of the fire. The same correspondent, writing in 1820, saw the foundations of the enclosure still in the turf, though its stones had gone to mend the road to the harbour.

A few of the old people still remember convening there, and throwing a small cheese across through the flame on Midsummer's Eve.
