No longer kept

At Midsummer people in the Vale of Glamorgan wrapped a cart-wheel thickly in straw, pushed a pole through its centre and, at a signal, set it alight and sent it rolling down the hill. If it went out before reaching the bottom the harvest would be poor; if it blazed all the way and long after, the harvest would be abundant. Trevelyan’s informant, born in 1809, remembered being taken to the hills to see it when she was about fourteen.

If this fire-wheel went out before it reached the bottom of the hill, a very poor harvest was promised.
