The first person over the threshold on New Year’s Day was thought to shape the family’s luck, above all the daughters’, for the whole year. To keep out anyone unlucky, one of the young women would arrange beforehand for a favoured young man to call early, never empty handed, with the season’s greetings. A woman arriving first was bad luck, however lovely she was.

Should a woman enter first, she is considered unpropitious, be she lovely as an angel.
