Lady Shelley’s New Year rewards at Maresfield

No longer kept

Every New Year’s Day at Maresfield Park the industrious poor who had kept off parish relief were given prizes of up to two guineas. Lady Shelley handed them out for good behaviour, neat cottages and gardens, and steady churchgoing, and the children of the Sunday and national schools were then sat down to a large dinner in the servants’ hall and given prizes of their own. A correspondent signing J. S. told Hone the practice had only been running a few years and had made many poor families strive to avoid the parish.
