Workington had a friendly society of more than two hundred women, and every New Year’s Day its members sat down to an annual dinner. At the dinner the year’s accounts were settled and new rules were made. Members received a weekly allowance when sick, and every married member was allowed ten shillings and sixpence child-bed money.
